I’ve had not one but two hair transplants: a hair transplant in Florida, USA and a hair transplant in Istanbul, Turkey. As a Black woman with kinky, curly Afro hair, I couldn’t find much honest information about hair transplants for Black women from people who look like me. So I’m sharing it all here from my personal experience.
Like most Black women, I grew up in braids. From childhood, I wore tight braids and never thought twice about it. I can’t tell you exactly when my hairline started receding. It happened so slowly that I didn’t notice until one day my edges were just… gone. After that, I became a slave to wigs. And for someone who loves the water and living free, that was hard. I held back from swimming, from spontaneous beach days, from just being, because I was always conscious of my hair. It chipped away at my confidence and my freedom in ways I didn’t fully realize until I got them back.
Hair loss from years of tight braids, often called traction alopecia, is something so many of us deal with quietly. I’m not quiet about it anymore.
At my first consultation, I learned that to get the full density I wanted, I’d need two procedures. So I made a plan.
Yes & men too! But your hair texture matters when choosing a method and a doctor. Afro hair grows in a curl below the skin too, so the surgeon needs experience with kinky and coily hair to harvest the follicles without damaging them. Ask any clinic directly whether they’ve worked with Afro hair, and ask to see before-and-after photos of Black patients.
My first transplant was in the USA. After a video consultation, my doctor recommended a technique specifically for my kinky hair texture.
With this technique, the doctor removes a thin strip of scalp from the back of the head, harvests the follicles, and transplants them into the thinning areas. It does leave a scar, but mine healed really thin and you can’t see it unless I’m bald.
I flew in from The Bahamas the day before, had surgery, and flew home two days later. By month 7, my results were honestly life-changing!

Yes & No. The painful part for me was the local anesthesia injections, both times. After that, the procedure itself was manageable. Some clinics offer sedation, but it didn’t work for me.
And my personal tip: glam helps you heal. I wore earrings, did my makeup, and popped on lashes during recovery. Feeling cute matters, Ladies! Gents…wear whatever makes you feel good!
