Most of us in The Bahamas grow up assuming the Amex Platinum Card belongs to somebody else’s banking system. We see it at hotel check-in desks and airport lounges and figure you need a US address and a US credit score to get one.
You don’t. You can apply for an Amex Platinum Card as a Bahamian, living in The Bahamas.
The problem is that nobody explains how. So here is what you need to know before you start.
Yes, the Amex Platinum is available in The Bahamas
American Express cards are issued in The Bahamas through a local bank, under license from American Express. The application happens at home, in a banking system you already know.
So why does it still feel like a secret? Because the information is scattered. You won’t find the process laid out step by step in one place, and if you ask the wrong person you can walk away with a shrug instead of an application.
That gap is the only thing standing between a lot of Bahamians and this card.
Why it’s worth having if you travel
I travel for a living, so I look at a card for what it does once I leave Nassau. The Platinum earns its place in my wallet for four reasons:
- Points on what you already spend. You earn Membership Rewards points on everyday purchases, with more on travel, and you can put them toward flights, hotels and car rentals.
- A concierge that answers. Platinum concierge service runs 24/7 for travel and lifestyle requests.
- Travel insurance built in. Coverage applies when you pay for the trip with the card.
- Rental car protection abroad. Rent with the card and the car is covered outside The Bahamas.
A straight word, though: this is a premium card with an annual fee. It pays off if you travel and spend enough to use the benefits. Benefits and offers also change, so check the current terms before you apply.
Where most applications stall
Getting approved is rarely about luck. It usually comes down to three things people get wrong before they ever fill in a form:
- Starting in the wrong place. Who you speak to first decides how smooth the rest goes.
- Incomplete paperwork. A premium card asks for more than a standard application, and one missing document can send you back to the start.
- Applying blind. If you don’t know what the bank is looking for, you can’t present yourself well.
Each one is easy to fix once you know the answer. That is exactly what I wrote down.
What’s in the guide
I put everything into a 6-page guide, Your Complete AMEX Application Guide for Bahamians. It is short on purpose: you can read it in one sitting and apply the same week.
Inside:
- The application process, step by step, so you know what happens and in what order
- The documents and requirements to have ready before you apply
- The benefits you get as a cardholder
- Direct bank contacts from my own network, so you start with the right person
One more thing: a card like this only works in your favour if you treat it like cash. Spend what you already have, pay the balance in full every month, and let the points be the bonus, not the reason.

The guide is $12 and downloads instantly. That is less than lunch, and it saves you weeks of asking around.
